Shocking! Suspect with Taser and Rope Busted Trying to Kidnap Memphis Mayor—You Won’t Believe What Happened!
Attempted Kidnapping of Memphis Mayor Thwarted
A man was recently accused of trying to kidnap the mayor of Memphis, Tennessee, when he showed up at the mayor’s residence in a gated community. Authorities later detained him with a variety of suspicious items in his vehicle, including a Taser, gloves, rope, and duct tape.
Trenton Abston, 25, was charged with attempted kidnapping, stalking, and criminal trespass. According to police reports, Abston approached Mayor Paul Young’s home on a Sunday night. Young, who was at home with his family, observed through a doorbell camera that the suspect was wearing gloves and had a noticeable bulge in his hoodie pocket. When no one answered the door, the man fled, but authorities identified him from security footage and a police database. Abston was apprehended at his workplace after police showed his employer a photo taken the night of the incident.
Investigations revealed that Abston’s vehicle appeared multiple times near the mayor’s residence between May and June, despite the neighborhood’s significant security measures, including walls, gates, and surveillance cameras. Security footage showed Abston scaling a wall directly into the subdivision and walking straight to Young’s home, knocking on the door. Abston admitted to police that he waited until evening to approach the mayor, claiming he was angry about crime issues in the city and armed himself with a Taser before attempting to make contact.
Mayor Young responded to the incident by urging the community to communicate respectfully and avoid violence over disagreements. He also expressed concern about the links between online hostility and real-world violence, especially amid heightened threats and recent tragedies elsewhere in the country.
