Minnesota Lawmaker Shocked After Near-Fatal Shooting: Exclusive Inside Look!
Lawmakers Survive Shooting Attack at Home; Suspect Captured
A Minnesota state senator and his wife were shot a total of 17 times during a home invasion, shortly after attending a Democratic fundraising event. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when the couple was awakened by pounding at their door, with an individual claiming to be a police officer seeking entry. Upon opening the door, they faced a gunman pointing a weapon at them.
All three were in the entryway. The senator lunged at the attacker as the gun was aimed directly at him, receiving nine gunshot wounds. His wife attempted to push the gunman back and shut the door but was hit eight times in the process. Their daughter, Hope, quickly slammed and locked the door, calling 911 for help.
The suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, 57, fled the scene after the shooting. Police say he then drove to the nearby home of Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman, where he fatally shot her, her husband, and the family dog. Boelter was arrested approximately 43 hours later following the largest manhunt in Minnesota’s history.
The Hoffmans expressed devastation over the murders of Lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, noting that their daughters, Hope and Sophie, are friends. The couple is still recovering from their injuries; John remains in critical but stable condition, and Yvette is in stable condition after surgeries.
The shootings are believed to be politically motivated, with the gunman targeting individuals with ties to Democratic causes and abortion rights. The suspect had a list of 70 names, mainly Democrats and affiliated figures.
Authorities have not released a motive, but the suspected shooter remains in federal custody on charges of murder. The victims’ families have acknowledged they have given up some privacy but emphasize the importance of civic civility and peace in society.
