City’s CEO Ferran Soriano Defends Club World Cup and Discusses Transfer Strategy
Manchester City’s CEO, Ferran Soriano, has praised the Club World Cup as a vital and exciting addition to the international football calendar. He views it as a significant step forward in the globalization of the sport.
Soriano, who has been instrumental in expanding City’s global presence through the City Football Group, emphasizes that participation in the tournament aligns with the club’s international ambitions. Despite criticism, including some from City players, he believes involvement is crucial for a club with worldwide roots.
“It’s essential for us because we are a global club,” Soriano stated. “While we are proud of our local history, it’s also important to showcase our style of beautiful football globally. It’s a combination that works very well, and we’re glad to participate.”

City’s campaign in the tournament began with a 2-0 victory over Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia, with Jeremy Doku scoring one of the goals. They will face Al Ain from Abu Dhabi, who were defeated by Juventus in their opening match.
Soriano further stated that the tournament highlights the importance of global competition, saying, “Soccer is a worldwide sport, and it’s vital to have teams from Morocco, Korea, and other countries compete. This is part of football’s inevitable globalization.”
The club has strengthened its squad ahead of the tournament with four new signings, including Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders. With 24 outfield players now in the squad, Soriano hinted that transfer activity might be concluding for the summer, after previously only making minimal changes last year.
“We’re happy with the work we’ve done this summer,” he added. “The squad is now renewed, and we’re excited for the upcoming season.”
