Girl Attacked by Alligator in Shallow NC Water—Terrifying Bite Caught on Camera!

Girl Attacked by Large Alligator in North Carolina Lake

A 12-year-old girl was injured in a surprise alligator encounter while playing in shallow water at Lake Waccamaw. Several children were in the 4-foot-deep water when the girl suddenly screamed, claiming she had been bitten.

As the children hurried away, a massive alligator emerged from the water. Authorities confirmed the creature was approximately 12 feet long. The girl sustained injuries described as serious but not life-threatening, though it remains unclear whether she was bitten or scratched. The injuries were definitely caused by the alligator’s attack, officials said.

Wildlife officials initially estimated the alligator to be around 7 feet, but a confirmed photo shows it to be much larger. The animal was euthanized following the incident, which is standard protocol, and an investigation is underway by wildlife authorities.

Experts note that the alligator was exhibiting unusual behavior, likely due to feeding—an illegal activity in North Carolina that can cause alligators to lose their natural wariness and become more aggressive. Lake Waccamaw normally has about 600 alligators, mostly staying in the murky canal waters rather than the lake itself.

Wildlife officials emphasize that the girl was not at fault and that alligators are rarely seen during daytime hours in the lake. They also warn against feeding alligators, as this encourages unnatural behavior and can lead to conflicts like this. Feeding is a serious offense and can cause dangerous interactions.

Local authorities, including the mayor, responded swiftly. Lake Waccamaw is seeing increased development, leading to more human-wildlife interactions. Community leaders advise residents and visitors to stay vigilant, avoid dumping food waste into the lake, and maintain a safe distance from these reptiles.
