Breaking: Ex-Gov. Pataki Says Curtis Sliwa Can Win NYC Mayor Race Thanks to Dem Slate!

Former Governor George Pataki Sees Potential in Sliwa’s NYC Mayoral Bid

Former three-term Republican governor George Pataki expressed confidence that Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels, has a real shot at winning the next mayoralty of New York City, citing the current Democratic field’s weaknesses and scandals.

“This is the weakest Democratic field in recent history,” Pataki remarked, highlighting Sliwa’s financial backing and ability to appeal to independents, disillusioned Democrats, and Republicans alike.

Sliwa, 71, leverages his extensive knowledge of the city—neighborhoods, subways, and public safety—to gain an edge, according to Pataki. The ex-governor emphasized Sliwa’s grassroots credibility, particularly his volunteer patrols addressing safety concerns and homelessness. Pataki believes the city’s leadership was best during the era of Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, both Republicans.

Pataki believes Sliwa’s local experience and financial momentum position him as a strong contender for mayor.

Pataki will host a campaign fundraiser for Sliwa on June 26 in Times Square, aiming to bolster his campaign ahead of the Democratic primary. The event, co-hosted by Republican leader Ed Cox and the NYGOP Asian Caucus, invites donations from $250 to $2,100.

He criticized the Democratic ballot, arguing that if former Governor Andrew Cuomo wins, he must face an electorate skeptical of allegations that led to his resignation, including sexual misconduct accusations he denies. Additionally, Pataki warned that if socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani becomes the Democrat nominee, many mainstream Democrats might shift to Sliwa due to Mamdani’s far-left stance.

If Mamdani wins, he could cause fractures within the Democratic base, encouraging defections to Sliwa.

Additionally, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams faces scrutiny, though recent federal charges were dropped. Pataki notes the challenge for third-party candidates, stating, “It’s almost impossible for an independent candidate to win.”

Pataki, 79, was elected governor in 1994 by defeating Mario Cuomo and remains the last Republican to hold statewide office in New York.
