R. Kelly was hospitalized after overdosing on medication while in prison.

Court documents obtained by Page Six reveal that the singer, Robert Sylvester Kelly, was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, on June 13. The documents state he was given an excessive dose of medication that posed a life-threatening risk while at the Federal Correctional Institute in Butner, NC.

The court records mention that Kelly, 58, was placed in solitary confinement “against his will” and with his medications on June 10.

His legal team reported that “He takes medication for anxiety and sleep, along with other meds.” The documents claim prison staff approached him and showed him his medications, which will reportedly be recorded on security footage.

Kelly’s lawyer states that staff later brought additional medication and instructions for Kelly to take it, which was also caught on camera.

According to court papers, Kelly took the meds as instructed on June 12, 2025, but the following morning, he experienced dizziness, black spots, and fainted. He was found unconscious and taken to the hospital on a gurney.

At the hospital, it was confirmed he had been overdosed with a dangerous amount of medication, leading to a two-day stay for treatment.

Kelly’s lawyer accuses prison officials of putting his life at risk by administering doses well above safe limits, and suggests this occurred shortly after Kelly filed a motion claiming the Bureau of Prisons was plotting to kill him.

Documents reveal Kelly tried to stand but fell, crawled to the door, and lost consciousness before being placed on a gurney.

Further allegations include prison staff removing Kelly from blood-thinners and blocking surgery needed for blood clots, prompting his lawyer to seek his release to home confinement for safety reasons.

Page Six has contacted Kelly’s legal representatives and the facility for comments. This story is being updated.
