Bernie Sanders & 7 Senators Slam DNC—Demand Banishment of Super PACs from Primaries!

Democratic Senators Push for Campaign Finance Reform Ahead of 2028

As preparations for the 2028 Democratic presidential primary begin, a group of Senate Democrats is urging action to limit the influence of big money in elections. Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and others have expressed concern about dark money and super PACs undermining democracy.

Politicians at a rally

In their letter to Senate leader Chuck Schumer and DNC Chair Ken Martin, the senators highlighted the damaging effects of the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United ruling, which allows unlimited money in politics. They called for comprehensive reform to eliminate the corrupting influence of dark money in primaries and general elections.

They emphasized the importance of stopping billionaire-funded super PACs from controlling the primary process and influencing election outcomes, including efforts to defeat Democratic candidates in general elections. These practices, they argue, threaten the integrity of democracy.

Some states, like Arizona, have already taken steps to curb outside spending, with the state Democratic Party adopting measures to prevent super PACs from benefiting primary candidates. The senators urge the national party to follow suit and ban super PACs from primaries to uphold democratic principles.

While federal legislation to overturn Citizens United faces an uphill battle due to the Supreme Court’s conservative majority, Democrats have the opportunity to lead by example and clean up their own primary processes. They believe this is essential to restore public trust and ensure fair elections.
