“the being formally known as Kanye West. I am YE,” he announced then, also using that name for his album released that year, which he recorded at his Wyoming ranch.

In 2021, he filed paperwork to legally change his name for personal reasons, which was approved in 2022.

He later argued that the change was significant: “He didn’t make this decision lightly. It’s now permanent. His name is Ye,” stated a source.

In March 2024, his chief of staff, Milo Yiannopoulos, demanded in writing that West be referred to solely as Ye, describing the original name as a “slave name.”

Milo Yiannopoulos argued that West’s new name confers a sense of full self-determination, calling to end the historical connotations of the original name. Getty Images

His representatives emphasize the importance of his chosen name, stating:

“This is who he is now. His name is Ye,” a source said. Additionally, Yiannopoulos called on platforms and institutions to update their records to reflect West’s new identity, branding it as a move for full self-ownership and respect for his preferences as a Black man in America.
