Mother and Daughter Apologize After Queens Parking Spot Brawl
A mother and daughter involved in a violent altercation over a parking spot in Queens have issued an apology following widespread online backlash. The incident was captured on video, showing them physically attacking a young woman.
The victim, Jada McPherson, a 21-year-old student, expressed skepticism about the sincerity of their apology, feeling it was driven by the video’s viral status rather than genuine remorse. “I don’t accept it because it seems superficial and motivated by publicity,” she said.
The altercation unfolded outside a residence on Putnam Avenue when Dumitru, 45, and her daughter Sabrina Starman, along with an unidentified man, confronted McPherson after she attempted to park in a space the daughter was holding. The incident escalated into a physical fight, with footage showing Dumitru and Starman hitting, pulling hair, and pushing McPherson to the ground while exchanging racial and ethnic insults.
During the melee, Dumitru was heard shouting racial slurs, and McPherson responded with her own derogatory remarks. Since the video went viral, the family received threatening messages, including one that stated, “You will be seeing me shortly. I am going to murder all of you,” causing them to fear for their safety.
Dumitru shared her distress, revealing she has received hundreds of death threats and feels traumatized. “I fear for my life,” she said, mentioning she hasn’t slept or eaten properly since the incident.
The dispute began when McPherson tried to park in the space, which was temporarily held by Dumitru. The mother claimed McPherson provoked them with aggressive behavior. Both Dumitru and Starman, who were charged with assault and harassment, have expressed remorse, though McPherson feels the threats and violence are unwarranted and disproportionate to the incident.
In her reflection, Dumitru admitted she learned a lesson from her actions: “I will never do that again. It’s not worth it. If you want the parking spot, take it—violence is never the answer.”
