Teen Loses Fingers in Firework Accident but Saves Arm Using Movie-inspired Technique

An 18-year-old from Kentucky narrowly escaped a severe injury after a firework mishap, managing to save his arm thanks to a unique first-aid trick inspired by a popular film.

Andrew Stratton, known as Andi, was lighting a firework handed to him by friends when it unexpectedly exploded within seconds. The blast resulted in the loss of three middle fingers and part of his thumb on his left hand. Fortunately, he was able to control the bleeding using a method he learned from the movie Forrest Gump. Strapping his belt tightly around his arm similar to a tourniquet, Stratton slowed the bleeding until he received proper medical attention.

Stratton’s mother shared that the accident was entirely unintentional and occurred during a casual outing after his construction job. The firework detonated prematurely, leading to his injuries. He was wearing sunglasses at the time, which prevented more serious eye damage, although debris still scratched his corneas.

He credited an acclaimed 1994 film for saving his arm.

Video footage captured the shocking moment, showing Stratton screaming for help while someone filmed, instead of helping him. His mother expressed concern over the delay in aid, noting the footage was difficult to watch. Despite the trauma, Stratton spent 12 days hospitalized, with doctors continuing to evaluate the possibility of losing his entire hand.

He remains hopeful and told medical personnel he plans to leave his fate in God’s hands and pray for the best.
