Ellen DeGeneres Supports Rosie O’Donnell Amid Trump Citizenship Threat
Ellen DeGeneres Supports Rosie O’Donnell Amid Controversy
Despite their long-standing rivalry, Ellen DeGeneres publicly backed Rosie O’Donnell following threats made by President Trump to revoke O’Donnell’s citizenship. DeGeneres reposted a message on Instagram containing Trump’s claim on Truth Social that he was “considering” stripping O’Donnell of her citizenship—though legally powerless to do so—and referred to her as a “threat to humanity.”
DeGeneres, 67, shared an image of Trump’s warning alongside a photo of O’Donnell, captioning it with a supportive comment: “Good for you @rosie.” She also included O’Donnell’s response on social media, where the comedian dismissed Trump’s threats, saying, “I’m not yours to silence. I never was.”
O’Donnell responded to Trump’s comments by mockingly calling him “King Joffrey with a tangerine spray tan” and asserting her resilience: “You want to revoke my citizenship? Go ahead and try it.” She emphasized her intent to continue building a life where decency exists, noting she moved to Ireland with her son Clay two months prior and shared her decision on social media in March.
O’Donnell, 63, explained her move by saying she wanted to create a life for her autistic child in a country where “decency still exists.” DeGeneres, who relocated to England with her wife Portia De Rossi last year, publicly supported her former friend’s stance and move.
O’Donnell reflected on their past, revealing she once felt hurt when DeGeneres said they weren’t friends, but clarified she holds no malice. “I wish her all good things in her life,” she stated, emphasizing that though they are different people with unresolved issues, she does not harbor hostility. The two women, both prominent figures in entertainment, have navigated a complex history marked by disagreements and reconciliation efforts.
