Brooklyn Father Fatally Shot While En Route to Pick Up Daughter
A young father from Brooklyn was shot and killed Saturday night while on his way to retrieve his 9-year-old daughter from a beauty parlor. The gunman remains at large.
Jahshyim Whitfield, 27, was traveling in Clinton Hill shortly before 9:30 p.m. when he was struck by gunfire in the torso, collapsing onto the sidewalk. He was rushed to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Whitfield, a security guard and father of two, was known for his devotion to his family. Relatives described him as a caring father who loved his daughters, Ariana, 9, and Kay Lani, 4. His grandmother, Evelyn Whitefield, expressed her heartbreak, saying, “My firstborn is gone. My son is gone. He called me ‘Ma’ and preferred coming to my house over his own mother’s — he loved grandma’s cooking.”
His relatives explained that Whitfield was on his way to pick up Ariana when he was shot. A woman identifying herself as Whitfield’s aunt shared, “He was a great father, dedicated to his family. While they took him, his daughter was spending her summer with him.”
Now, his family faces a future forever changed. “Her life is going to be different forever,” said his grandmother about Ariana.
Authorities continue to investigate the shooting, but no motive has been identified, and no arrests have been made.
