Tiger Woods’ Take on Jack Nicklaus as the GOAT in 2016
Legacy of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus in Golf
Despite years away from competition, both Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus remain icon figures in golf. Nicklaus has long since retired, while Woods has faced significant injuries recently. Woods was advised by Nicklaus to use a golf cart for his health, but he chose to push through without that assistance.
Woods participated in the recent TGL tournament, yet has yet to compete in a PGA Tour event scheduled for 2025. The debate over who is the greatest golfer continues, with both legends holding impressive accolades.

Woods on Nicklaus as the GOAT
Nicklaus holds the record with 18 major championship wins, compared to Woods’ 15, making him the leader in that category. In a 2016 interview, Woods was asked how to measure the greatest golfer of all time—whether by major titles or overall talent. Woods responded that it’s difficult to compare across generations, but he believed he could match skills with Nicklaus and that Nicklaus would feel the same.
Woods’ Confidence in Achieving Major Titles
When asked if he believed he would win 18 majors, Woods admitted, “To be honest with you, no,” but also confidently stated, “I have accepted that I am going to get more.” Since then, Woods has secured another major victory, triumphing at The Masters in 2019 after a thrilling comeback at Augusta National, where he edged out Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Xander Schauffele by one shot.
Koepka praised Woods’ win, noting it was Woods’ fifth Masters title, just behind Nicklaus’ record. Woods’ ongoing pursuit of greatness cements his legacy alongside Nicklaus as one of golf’s all-time greats.
