California Dems Attack Police Masks—Banning Officers’ Masks While Allowing Criminals to Hide!

California Democratic legislators, Sens. Scott Wiener and Jesse Arreguin, propose the “No Secret Police Act” to ban law enforcement from wearing face coverings during public interactions, amid tensions over mask usage during protests. The bill aims to enhance transparency by requiring officers to display identifying details such as name tags on helmets.

The legislation also allows masks only in circumstances like wildfires or medical emergencies, where masks are necessary for health reasons. Riot gear, provided the officer’s face remains visible, would still be permitted. The bill was introduced following concerns over masked officers in protests, with Wiener criticizing their role in creating fear and chaos.

Wiener expressed concern over masked officers acting covertly, saying, “We’re witnessing the rise of secret police—masked, unidentifiable, wearing army fatigues—disappearing people which undermines democracy.” He added, “This legislation helps restore community trust.”

He also highlighted that recent federal operations have fostered fear, urging that law enforcement shouldn’t resemble secret police in an authoritarian state. The bill would exclude tactical units like SWAT and officers who need masks for health emergencies, including wildfires.

In Los Angeles, protesters often cover their faces with masks or keffiyehs, making it difficult for authorities to identify those involved in violent acts like setting vehicles on fire. Similar mask bans are being considered in New York, where full-coverage ski masks have been targeted amid rising protests against Israeli actions on campuses and city streets.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul advocated for a statewide mask ban but retracted her stance in April, adding fines for those wearing masks during crimes. These measures aim to increase police accountability and community safety amidst ongoing protests.
