Billy Horschel’s Verdict on Rory McIlroy: Golfer & Person
Billy Horschel Shares Insights on Rory McIlroy’s Early Golfing Talents

Renowned golfer Billy Horschel, known for his popularity and respect within the sport, vividly remembers spotting Rory McIlroy’s potential as a teenager.
Though a few years older, Horschel has observed McIlroy’s meteoric rise, noting the Northern Irish star’s extraordinary talent from an early age. Despite Horschel’s own success in winning major tournaments, he acknowledges that McIlroy’s achievements have been exceptional—claiming four majors by age 24 and adding The Masters in 2025.
Horschel emphasizes that it was evident early on just how talented McIlroy was, as captured in his comments on a recent podcast, “The Thing About Golf.”

Horschel’s Perspective on McIlroy’s Character and Career
Horschel, affectionately known as “Billy Ho,” often offers candid insights about fellow players. During a recent interview, he reflected on his long-standing relationship with McIlroy, recalling their early encounters and the immense respect he has developed.
He recounted how he first noticed McIlroy’s talent after a youth tournament at Carnoustie, when the Irishman was just 17. Horschel played against him a few times and recognized his extraordinary ability and unwavering self-belief. Though initially competitive and somewhat boisterous, Horschel admitted that their relationship matured into one of mutual respect and friendship over the years.
“We have a great friendship, communicate regularly, and I admire what he’s achieved,” Horschel said. “We never imagined how far Rory would go, but his career has been truly historic.”
The rivalry and camaraderie between the two persisted into recent tournaments. At last year’s BMW Championship at Wentworth, they competed fiercely in a playoff, which Horschel won with a remarkable long putt. Despite the high-stakes contest, both players showed their respect, sharing a warm embrace on the green.
Horschel emphasizes that such genuine respect is rare in professional golf, highlighting the deep bonds that can develop over years of competition.
