Clash Ensues After Chelsea’s Club World Cup Win
Chelsea secured a 3-0 victory in the Club World Cup final, with goals from Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro before halftime, marking their first triumph in the tournament’s new 32-team format. However, celebrations quickly turned chaotic after the final whistle.
Post-match tensions escalated as PSG head coach Luis Enrique appeared to strike Chelsea forward Joao Pedro in the face amid heated scenes. The altercation started when Pedro was involved in a confrontation with PSG players Gianluigi Donnarumma and Achraf Hakimi, with other players like Andrey Santos also present. Enrique then approached the scene and made physical contact with Pedro, requiring his own player, Presnel Kimpembe, to restrain him.
Pedro fell to the ground clutching his face, while other players from both teams became involved in the scuffle. Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia quickly moved to protect their teammate, while Donnarumma was pushed by Tosin Adarabioyo. Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s manager, hurried to break up the chaos, pulling his players away and attempting to calm the situation, as did Chelsea players to defuse tensions with the PSG goalkeeper.
The match itself was fiery, featuring six yellow cards and a red card shown to PSG’s Joao Neves for violent conduct in the 85th minute. Despite the angry scenes, Chelsea made history as the fifth club and first from England to win multiple FIFA Club World Cup titles, joining elite clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Maresca praised his squad’s performance, emphasizing their aggressive start and resilience under challenging conditions. He expressed excitement for the future but was also pleased about the upcoming three-week break for the team.
