Liverpool Honors Diogo Jota & Andre Silva in Pre-Season Tribute After Tragic Loss
Liverpool Honors Diogo Jota and Brother in Pre-Season Tribute
Liverpool paid a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, during their first pre-season match against Preston since their tragic passing. Jota, aged 28, and Andre, 25, died in a car accident in Spain on July 3.
Before kickoff, players from both teams gathered for a minute’s silence, preceded by a solemn tribute with digital screens displaying Jota’s image and a commemorative matchday program featuring a black-and-white photo of Jota holding the Premier League trophy. Fans also showed support, singing Jota’s song and waving flags and scarves bearing his name.
Preston’s captain Benjamin Whiteman laid a wreath in front of the away end as part of the tribute, and players wore black armbands. Jota’s shirt number 20 has been retired by Liverpool in his honor.
The atmosphere was somber yet respectful, with Liverpool captain Mohamed Salah leading the team’s tribute, and club captain Virgil van Dijk and Jota’s close friend Andrew Robertson present in the stands.
In a pre-match interview, Reds’ manager Arne Slot expressed that the team will forever carry Jota in their hearts. He reflected on the difficulty of focusing amid their grief but emphasized the importance of staying true to their emotions — whether to laugh, cry, train, or simply be themselves — as a way to honor Jota’s authenticity and spirit.
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, making 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals, and providing 26 assists. He was part of the squad that secured the Premier League title last season and had previously won the FA Cup and two League Cups.
