Elon Musk’s 1999 Footage Surfaces as He Achieves 25-Year Dream with X Money Card
Reappearance of Elon Musk Footage from 1999 Sparks Interest Amid X Money Card Plans
Archived footage from 1999 has resurfaced showing Elon Musk at age 26, standing in front of an ATM and discussing his innovative banking vision during an interview with CNN Perspectives. Musk explained his plan to reshape banking: “This is an ATM, and what we’re gonna do is transform the traditional banking industry.” The broadcast highlighted that Musk believed raising capital was simple, just “making a series of phone calls,” and announced his online banking initiative, X.com. This platform later merged with Confinity to become PayPal.
Musk re-acquired the X.com domain in 2017 after purchasing Twitter, and in 2022, he announced an ambitious “everything app” concept for X, integrating banking, messaging, and entertainment features. Earlier this year, X CEO Linda Yaccarino revealed plans for X Money, a digital wallet and peer-to-peer payment system partnered with Visa, as reported by the Financial Times.
Recent code analysis suggests X is also developing physical X Money debit cards, with features allowing users to set up, activate, and report lost or stolen cards. The app seems to support multiple card providers, including MasterCard and American Express, hinting at potential collaborations. Yaccarino indicated that these features mark the beginning of many new offerings planned for 2025.
Meanwhile, Tesla’s robotaxi service has hit the streets, gaining attention for its ride pricing, and Musk’s neighbors jokingly suggest sending him to Mars due to his busy innovations and public presence.
