Elon Musk Seeks to Save Tesla After Trump’s Blow, US Ambassador Reports

Elon Musk Opposes New Budget Bill Due to Threat to Tesla’s Profits

Elon Musk discusses the impact of political decisions on Tesla.

Elon Musk, who has contributed over $250 million to support a political figure, is now voicing concerns over a proposed budget bill that could significantly harm Tesla’s financial health. The bill, celebrated by former President Trump as “beautiful,” proposes to remove federal emissions credits that Tesla has depended on to boost sales and revenue. These credits have accounted for billions in income, with Tesla earning $595 million in the first quarter of 2025 alone, surpassing its net profit.

Critics say the bill threatens Tesla’s primary profit stream, which is derived from selling emissions credits to traditional automakers. Without these incentives, Tesla’s revenue could decline sharply. An insider noted that about 75% of Tesla’s credit income originated in the US, and the removal of penalties related to fuel efficiency standards (CAFE) could lead to the early cancellation of existing credit agreements.

Beyond emissions credits, Tesla’s operations—including its network of 2,600 charging stations, battery manufacturing, and solar energy systems—are supported by federal incentives. The bill’s push to end the $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit, set to expire in September, further threatens Tesla’s sales and growth prospects, especially amidst ongoing trade tensions and policy uncertainties.

Musk has publicly criticized the bill, calling it a “disgrace,” and has threatened to use his resources to politically oppose lawmakers in favor of the legislation. However, his influence appears limited at this stage, as the bill has passed both chambers of Congress and awaits the president’s signature.

While Musk has threatened to fund efforts to replace supportive lawmakers, few have publicly opposed the bill, most backing it due to extended personal tax cuts and financial support from Trump-aligned investors. With Musk stepping down from some political roles and Trump’s influence prevailing, the billionaire’s capacity to counteract the legislation is constrained. Experts suggest that Trump’s political leverage makes this a difficult fight for Musk to win.
