Eric Dane is gradually losing physical function as he battles amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The “Grey’s Anatomy” actor discussed his condition publicly for the first time during an interview with Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America.”

“I have only one working arm — my dominant, left side,” he explained. “My right side has ceased functioning.”

He warned that he might only have months before his remaining limb succumbs to the disease, expressing concern about his legs losing mobility.

Dane first noticed symptoms when his right hand felt weak. For nine months, he saw specialists and neurologists before receiving his diagnosis, an experience he recalls vividly:

“I will never forget those three letters. It’s on my mind the moment I wake up.”

He credits his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, as his main source of emotional support, calling her his “biggest champion.” The couple, married since 2004 with children Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, separated in 2018 but reunited in March after his diagnosis.

Despite the grim prognosis, Dane remains hopeful:

“I don’t believe this is the end of my story. I’m fighting as hard as I can,” he said, tearing up.

He also expressed frustration over the unpredictability of ALS, which affects his muscles and overall health. “There’s so much outside my control,” he added.

Throughout his health struggles, Dane relies heavily on his family, sharing that he talks to Rebecca daily and leans on her for strength.

He concluded, “I feel in my heart that I’m not done yet. I’m fighting with everything I have.”
