Born on September 25, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois, Madson was the son of Elaine Melson, an Emmy-winning filmmaker and author, and Calvin Christian Madson, a Navy veteran and firefighter. His heritage included Danish from his father’s side, along with Irish and Native American roots from his mother. He had two sisters—actress Virginia Madson and entrepreneur Cheryl Madson.

Madson began his acting career at the Steenwill Theater in Chicago, where he apprenticed under John Malkovich. He rose to fame with his portrayal of the menacing Mr. Blonde in Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 film Reservoir Dogs. The actor frequently collaborated with Tarantino, appearing in both Kill Bill movies, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His filmography also included notable titles such as WarGames, The Natural, Thelma & Louise, Donnie Brasco, and Die Another Day.
