He had Danish ancestry through his father and Irish and Native American roots from his mother. Madson was part of a family involved in the entertainment world, with his sister Virginia Madson being an actress and Cheryl Madson an entrepreneur.
His acting career started at the Steenwill Theater in Chicago, where he trained under John Malkovich. Madson gained prominence with his portrayal of the sinister Mr. Blonde in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs in 1992.
