DNC Chair rejects Zohran Mamdani’s refusal to condemn ‘Intifada’ chants

NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Faces Questions Over Support for Controversial Slogan

The chair of the Democratic National Committee, Ken Martin, dismissed concerns from some Jewish Democrats regarding the frontrunner for New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani, and his refusal to condemn the slogan “globalize the intifada.” In an interview, Martin signaled that the party remains inclusive of diverse views, even those associated with contentious protests against Israel.

When asked about Mamdani’s defense of the rallying cry supporting anti-Israel demonstrations, Martin acknowledged disagreements but emphasized the importance of coalition-building within the Democratic Party. He stated, “You win by bringing people into your coalition,” highlighting the party’s broad tent approach that includes conservatives, centrists, and progressives.

Mamdani, an outspoken critic of Israel, has defended the use of the phrase “globalize the intifada” and has refused multiple requests to condemn it, describing it as a reflection of Palestinians’ desire for equality and human rights. In interviews, he has emphasized his commitment to universal human rights over specific slogans, stating, “The language I use is rooted in a belief in universal human rights.”

Several Democratic figures, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have urged Mamdani to clarify his stance on the slogan. The city’s election could make Mamdani the first Muslim mayor of New York, a historic milestone if elected.
