LA Mayor Karen Bass Confronts Armed Federal Agents Sweeping Park

Immigration Raid at MacArthur Park Sparks City Crisis

Federal immigration agents, heavily armed and in force, descended upon MacArthur Park, prompting an immediate response from city officials. The operation involved armed personnel on foot, horseback, and in armored vehicles, creating a scene officials described as resembling a city under siege.

LA Mayor Karen Bass arrived at the scene shortly after the operation began, confronting the agents and demanding their immediate exit. She labeled the raid a “political stunt” and criticized what she called the aggressive show of force in a public park, which she regards as un-American.

During Bass’s brief visit, she was handed a direct line to the head of Customs and Border Protection by a CBP official. She stated that she spoke with the agency’s leadership before the agents left moments later. Bass expressed outrage over the escalation, calling it “absolutely outrageous” and emphasizing LA’s commitment to remaining a sanctuary city for immigrants.

People at the park, including children at a summer camp and health workers providing services to homeless individuals, were affected by the raid, temporarily displaced as authorities cleared the area. Mayor Bass shared a time-lapse video on social media showing agents marching across a soccer field that had hosted children’s activities just moments earlier.

Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino vowed the agency would remain in LA until its mission was complete, dismissing city officials’ objections and warning residents to get used to this new normal. LA Police reported they were unaware of the operation, which was led by Customs and Border Protection, a part of the Department of Homeland Security that declined to comment on ongoing investigations.

The incident adds to a tense climate in Los Angeles, a city that has faced numerous immigration enforcement actions and protests. The city’s government plans to mount legal challenges against federal policies, insisting that such operations undermine its sanctuary status and spread fear among immigrant communities.
