White House urges Dems to tone down anti-ICE rhetoric amid activist threats
White House Urges Civility Amid Immigration Controversy
The White House has called on Democratic leaders to refrain from harsh rhetoric against federal immigration agents, amid ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement policies. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt emphasized the importance of respecting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol personnel, encouraging lawmakers like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to meet directly with border officers, who she describes as dedicated public servants enforcing the law.
Despite efforts to maintain decorum, tensions persist within the Democratic Party. Some members report that their constituents express frustration, even suggesting the need for more aggressive actions, including violence, to attract media attention and galvanize support. A former aide noted, “The left flank is trying to push us toward that direction, but it’s not where we should be heading.”
Recent conflicts illustrate the volatile climate. Congressman LaMonica McIver was charged with federal offenses after allegedly assaulting immigration officers outside a Newark detention center. Likewise, Senator Alex Padilla was briefly detained after entering a Homeland Security briefing unannounced and approaching the security personnel, although no charges were filed afterward.
Activists within the party also demonstrate radical tendencies. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal highlighted protests at courthouses where activists oppose ICE agents, calling such actions inspiring. Meanwhile, public demonstrations and confrontations continue, reflecting a deeply divided view on immigration enforcement among Democrats.
In broader unrest, violence has occasionally erupted. Recently, a shooter targeting border agents in McAllen, Texas, was killed after firing upon officers, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by federal law enforcement amid heightened tensions over immigration policies.
