AOC Claims She Grew Up Between Bronx and Suburbs; Locals Remain Confused
Controversy Over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Claimed Bronx Roots
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded to criticism over her self-identification as a “Bronx girl,” explaining that she grew up “between” the Bronx and the suburbs, though residents near her childhood home remain skeptical. Social media circulated her old yearbook photos, prompting some locals—many of whom have Bronx roots—to question her narrative. Despite fundraising efforts off the controversy, she has not explicitly stated that she lived in the Bronx.
Aretired firefighter from the Bronx, Billy from Valhalla, pointed out that her speech didn’t match that of someone from the Bronx, saying, “You can tell right out of the gate she isn’t from the Bronx. Listen to her!” He emphasized that when people move away from the Bronx, their distinctive speech often remains, suggesting she doesn’t sound like a native Bronx resident.
Ocasio-Cortez, who was born in the Bronx but moved to Yorktown as a young child, attended local schools there. Her childhood home was sold in 2016 for $355,000, and public land records list her as a Yorktown resident before she entered Congress. Some locals, including Yorktown Democrats, defend her, arguing many proud residents are still proud of her despite the claims.
Others, like lifelong Bronx residents, argue it’s misleading to claim the Bronx roots if her family moved away early in life. Sandra S. expressed that it’s “a crime” to claim Bronx origins without significant ties. Sabrina Gomes, who also grew up above the Bronx, suggested that for some, the neighborhood feels more like home than the actual birthplace.
Despite the disagreements, Peter Cleary, a local Democratic leader, considers the controversy “silly,” noting many residents are proud of her accomplishments. Ocasio-Cortez herself addressed the issue on social media, stating, “My upbringing between The Bronx and Yorktown shaped my views on inequality, and I talk about it frequently.”
