Arsenal Accelerates £70m Viktor Gyokeres Move After Berta’s Portugal Talks with Sporting Lisbon
Arsenal’s Interest in Viktor Gyokeres Intensifies with Face-to-Face Talks in Portugal
Arsenal is progressing rapidly in its efforts to sign Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, with the club’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, traveling to Portugal for direct negotiations. The transfer could be valued at up to £70 million, according to reports.
Recent developments suggest that the move has gained momentum, as Berta met personally with Gyokeres, the prolific Swedish forward, to discuss a potential transfer. The discussions took place amid ongoing talks between Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon, with Berta’s trip seen as a crucial step in finalizing the deal.
Gyokeres’ current club, Sporting Lisbon, had concerns about his future amidst negotiations. The player had threatened to go on strike rather than return for pre-season training, prompting club president Frederico Varandas to emphasize that no formal offers had been received and to reject any perceived blackmail.
Gyokeres has been a standout performer, netting 97 goals in 102 games over the past two seasons in Portugal, and is under contract until 2028. This season, he turned down lucrative offers from Saudi clubs and attracted interest from Juventus, who ultimately missed out.
While Arsenal initially targeted RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as their primary No 9, attention has shifted to Gyokeres. The club has also shown interest in other attacking options, including Manchester City’s Rodrygo and Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze. Additionally, Arsenal is close to completing a £60 million deal for Spain international midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and plans to negotiate for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke.
Gyokeres’ potential move is part of Arsenal’s broader transfer strategy to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.
