Maria Shriver Opens Up About Her Divorce From Arnold Schwarzenegger
Maria Shriver recently shared her experiences and emotional journey following her 25-year marriage to Arnold Schwarzenegger, which ended in 2011. In her memoir, I Am Maria, she reflects on the tumultuous period after her divorce, describing it as “brutal and terrifying.”
She recounts a difficult time in her life, marked by the loss of her mother in 2009, the conclusion of her role as First Lady of California, and her father’s passing. These events coincided with the collapse of her marriage, which left her devastated: “It broke my heart, it broke my spirit.”
Early Life and Marriage
Shriver explains how she first felt an immediate attraction to Schwarzenegger, despite her family’s initial disapproval. She notes that their relationship surprised many, given Arnold’s background as a bodybuilder, actor, and Republican—traits that seemed unconventional for her family.
Initially, she put her journalism career on hold to support Arnold’s political ambitions, aiming to embrace her role as First Lady of California. Their marriage came to a halt in 2011 after Arnold admitted to fathering a child during an affair with their housekeeper over a decade earlier. This revelation left her feeling scared and uncertain about her future—without her marriage, family, or career.
Healing and Moving Forward
During her recovery, Shriver spent time in a convent, found solace in poetry writing, and confronted long-held beliefs about aging and loneliness. She realized she had been measuring her worth by impossible standards, and learned that being single does not equate to being unworthy or unloved.
The couple finalized their divorce in 2021, but have maintained a friendly relationship. They have occasionally been photographed together, including a family celebration in 2020. Schwarzenegger has spoken about their amicable separation, highlighting the positive impact they’ve had on their children through their cooperation.
“We are very proud of how we raised our kids,” Schwarzenegger said, emphasizing their mutual respect and effort to keep their children unaffected by the divorce.
