Homan Tells Mamdani to Step Aside as ICE Promises NYC Crackdown
Border Official Dismisses NYC Mayoral Candidate’s Immigration Stance
Tom Homan, the federal immigration enforcement coordinator, dismissed the promises made by NYC mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani to challenge Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if elected this November.
“Good luck with that,” Homan responded when asked about Mamdani’s plans. “We’re going to continue operating in New York City, and as President Trump stated two weeks ago, we will intensify our efforts on sanctuary cities.”
Homan criticized policies allowing releases of undocumented individuals, asserting that such practices endanger public safety and national security by disregarding detention requests.
Mamdani, who recently won the Democratic primary in a surprising upset over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, has called ICE a “rogue agency” and vowed to oppose its operations if he becomes mayor.
“We have to stand up and fight back,” Mamdani told NBC’s “Meet the Press,” describing recent ICE actions, including arrests at federal courthouses and peaceful protesters. “When I’m mayor, those days will end.”
Earlier this month, President Trump threatened to arrest Mamdani if he attempts to obstruct ICE activities.
“Trump’s statements aren’t just an attack on democracy; they send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: If you speak up, they will come for you,” Mamdani warned. “We will not accept this intimidation.”
While current Mayor Eric Adams has cooperated with federal immigration agencies, Mamdani criticizes this approach, positioning himself as an opponent to ICE’s aggressive tactics.
Homan assured that ICE will persist regardless of who resides at Gracie Mansion, promising increased enforcement and community operations to apprehend criminal aliens in various settings, including work sites.
Homan emphasized that enforcement efforts will intensify, with authorities prepared to act even if city officials do not cooperate, underscoring a commitment to pursue dangerous individuals relentlessly.
