Luis Diaz on Pain and Tribute to Diogo Jota After Losing Him

Liverpool’s Luis Diaz Opens Up on Devastating Loss of Diogo Jota

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has shared heartfelt thoughts on how the tragic death of teammate and close friend Diogo Jota has deeply affected him. Jota, 28, was laid to rest in Gondomar, Portugal, after he and his brother, Andre Silva, 25, tragically died in a car accident in northern Spain last week.

The incident occurred just over a week after Jota had married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, and was a father to three young children—Dinis (4), Duarte (2), and his baby daughter Mafalda (8 months).

The football community mourned the loss, with many players and staff paying tribute at Jota’s funeral. Diaz, who could not attend as he was traveling back to his homeland, posted an emotional message on Instagram, expressing his grief and fond memories.

He recalled how Jota offered him a heartfelt gesture during a difficult time when Diaz’s father was kidnapped in October 2023. Diaz described the emotional toll of receiving the news, revealing he “broke down in tears” upon hearing the news of Jota’s passing.

“He was a great friend and a key figure when I arrived in Liverpool. His family welcomed me into their lives, and we shared a strong bond. His gesture of support during my personal hardship meant a lot,” Diaz said.

Reflecting on Jota’s kindness, Diaz also shared a memorable moment when Jota celebrated by holding up Diaz’s shirt after a goal. “He made a very kind gesture towards me, which I will never forget,” he added.

Diaz concluded by sending strength to Jota’s family, emphasizing the profound loss and emphasizing how much Jota’s friendship will be cherished forever. “May he rest in peace. He was a great person who will always be remembered,” he said.
