Couple Dies in Wine Cellar Dry Ice Mishap Before July 4 Bash
Couple Dies After Exposure to Dry Ice in Houston Home
A married pair preparing for a holiday gathering in Houston was discovered dead in their wine cellar after being exposed to dangerous fumes from melting dry ice. Authorities responded to the residence on Friday night following reports of a hazardous material incident.
Responding police found the couple unconscious inside the cellar, which had been used to store dry ice. It appears they were overcome by the release of carbon dioxide gas produced as the dry ice melted, leading to their tragic deaths.
Stored dry ice in the cellar gradually turned to gas, which the authorities believe caused the couple to be asphyxiated. As dry ice is colder than water ice and lasts longer in solid form, mishandling can lead to dangerous buildup of carbon dioxide gas—a potentially lethal situation.
Dry ice, which is solid carbon dioxide, releases gas as it sublimates. The CDC emphasizes that improper storage or handling can result in toxic buildup, leading to suffocation or other serious health risks.
When inhaled in high concentrations, carbon dioxide gas can cause severe injury or death. Firefighters arriving at the scene described a strong chemical odor and required breathing apparatus to investigate further, finding the bodies inside the home. Both individuals were declared dead at the scene.
