Mamdani’s Controversial Video Mocking Hanukkah Sparks Outrage
Controversy Surrounds Mayoral Candidate Over Holiday Parody Videos
A prominent advocacy group has criticized a leading mayoral candidate for shared videos that mock Jewish traditions. The candidate, Zohran Mamdani, posted a humorous video from a parody album showing individuals in wigs dancing behind a menorah, spinning dreidels, and celebrating Hanukkah with Punjabi music.
The video, titled “Hey Hanukkah,” was originally released in 2015 by the Geeta Brothers, a parody project by Sikh-Canadian comedian Jus Reign. Mamdani shared the clip during last year’s Hanukkah celebrations, accompanied by a message wishing a happy holiday from Astoria and Long Island City.
He also posted a Christmas-themed parody video in 2024, again from the same group, including a message extending holiday wishes to his followers. Critics argue that these videos disrespect sacred traditions by turning them into comedic content. The group Stop Antisemitism condemned the videos, stating that cultural and religious traditions should be respected rather than mocked.
The controversy extends beyond these videos, as Mamdani has previously been scrutinized for his positions on Israel and for claiming African American heritage during college application processes. Some residents have expressed outrage, especially when he shared messages referencing the October 7th attack in Israel, invoking personal grief and community trauma.
Amidst the controversy, Mamdani remains a significant figure in local politics, with strong support and vocal opposition alike, highlighting ongoing tensions over cultural sensitivity and political expression in the city.
