Girls Soothe Campfire Songs Amid Texas Flood Evacuation
Severe Flooding and Evacuations at Texas Campsite
Heavy rainfall caused rapid flash flooding across parts of Texas, leading to widespread destruction and extensive rescue operations. At a popular Christian summer camp, Camp Mystic, waters surged through the area, damaging buildings, trapping people, and forcing mass evacuations.
A camp nurse documented the chaos, sharing footage of debris-strewn roads, stranded vehicles, and frightened children and adults evacuating via buses and rescue boats. One video shows children singing hymns to stay calm amid the chaos as they leave for a reunification center.
The floodwaters tore through the camp’s old structures, sweeping away campers and staff or confining them in their accommodations. Authorities confirmed 38 adults and 21 children have died so far, but 18 adults and four children remain unidentified. Among the deceased are five girls aged 8 and 9, and the camp’s owner.
In the immediate aftermath, over 850 individuals were rescued within 36 hours as emergency teams from multiple agencies searched for the 11 girls and one counselor still missing. Rescuers face significant obstacles, including fallen trees, overturned cars, and mudslides, making their efforts even more challenging.
Search and rescue teams operated boats and ground crews digging through debris in efforts to locate victims and survivors. One photo shows workers examining a damaged building, while another depicts a rescue boat on the flooded river near Hunt, Texas.
When questioned about whether the camp was evacuated earlier or if alerts were timely, officials declined to comment, ending a scheduled press conference abruptly. Questions remain regarding disaster preparedness and response as teams continue their life-saving efforts amidst treacherous conditions.
