Why Arsenal Paid £60m for Zubimendi: £9m Above Release Price

Arsenal Signs Martin Zubimendi for £60 Million, Surpassing His Release Clause

Arsenal confirmed the transfer of Spanish international midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for a fee of £60 million, exceeding his £51 million release clause. The 26-year-old player has committed to a five-year contract with the Gunners, who managed to outbid rival Premier League clubs Liverpool and Manchester City to secure his services.

Zubimendi has long been on Arsenal’s radar, and securing him represents a significant step in their summer transfer strategy. The club’s decision to pay above the release clause allowed payment in instalments, avoiding a lump sum payment of £51 million upfront, which could have limited their ability to pursue other high-profile targets.

The club is also in advanced negotiations with Sporting Lisbon over the transfer of Viktor Gyokeres, a deal expected to cost approximately £70 million and to further bolster Arsenal’s squad ahead of a crucial season.

Accompanying his signing, Arsenal is preparing an offer for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, with personal terms already agreed. Chelsea is demanding over £50 million for Madueke and has also inquired about Ethan Nwaneri, a young Arsenal talent still negotiating a new contract.

Zubimendi’s arrival enhances Arsenal’s midfield, which has undergone a reshuffle following the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho. He has appeared 180 times in La Liga for Real Sociedad after coming through their youth ranks, and has earned 18 caps for Spain, including participation in Euro 2024.

The midfielder expressed excitement about the move, noting it as a major milestone in his career and praising Arsenal’s playing style. Sporting director Andrea Berta also welcomed the move, emphasizing Zubimendi’s high quality and fit within their squad.

The signing is seen as vital for Arsenal’s ambitions to secure their first Premier League title in over two decades. His addition, along with other ongoing transfer efforts, highlights the club’s determination to compete at the highest level next season.
