Wayne Rooney Secures £800,000 BBC Deal to Become a Match of the Day Regular
Former England captain Wayne Rooney is reportedly set to transition from coaching to a media-focused role, signing an £800,000 deal with the BBC to become a regular pundit on Match of the Day.
The 39-year-old has been out of management since leaving Plymouth Argyle by mutual consent at the end of last year after a difficult seven-month tenure. This follows managerial stints at Derby County, DC United, and Birmingham City over the past few years.
Rooney has expressed enjoyment in punditry since stepping back from coaching. He has previously appeared on Amazon Prime Video’s Champions League coverage and had guest appearances on the BBC’s Match of the Day.
In an interview with talkSPORT last month, Rooney hinted that his immediate future would focus on media work, stating, “Just doing TV work at the moment and really enjoying it.”
The deal, as reported by The Sun, covers two years with the BBC, with potential for an extension. Rooney is expected to be officially announced later this month after impressing during previous guest spots.

The BBC’s coverage of the upcoming 2026 World Cup in the US, Mexico, and Canada will also include Rooney, with the option to extend his role for another two years. This move coincides with a broader effort by the broadcaster to refresh its punditry team, especially after Gary Lineker’s departure.
Insiders describe Rooney as “friendly, witty, and highly knowledgeable,” with his insights viewed as a valuable addition to the show in the evolving media landscape.
