Chris Paul to Play One More Year in the NBA After 20 Seasons

Chris Paul Reflects on Career and Future Plans

Despite turning 40 this past May, Chris Paul demonstrated his enduring skill and durability this season with the San Antonio Spurs. He was one of only three players on the team to play all 82 games, starting every single one.

Throughout the season, Paul contributed averages of 8.8 points and 7.4 assists per game, shooting 42.7% from the field and 37.7% from beyond the arc.

In a recent interview at the American Black Film Festival, Paul discussed his potential plans regarding retirement. When asked how much longer he intends to play, he responded, “At most, a year.” He emphasized the significance of family time, mentioning how he misses precious moments with loved ones, including his grandmother, who watches every game.

Paul is currently an unrestricted free agent for the second consecutive summer. Last year, he signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Spurs, joining notable figures like Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich and star rookie Victor Wembanyama. Although the team hoped to contend for the playoffs, setbacks including Popovich’s health issues and Wembanyama’s injury hampered their postseason chances. The Spurs finished with a 34-48 record, missing the Western Conference Play-In Tournament.

Paul expressed gratitude for his time with San Antonio but indicated he may seek opportunities elsewhere, as the franchise shifts focus to its young core, including No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper. His future remains uncertain, and he has yet to finalize his plans for next season.

Throughout his career, Paul has amassed numerous accolades, including 11 All-NBA selections, nine NBA All-Defensive Team nods, and league-leading in assists five times and steals six times. Having played for seven teams, his career averages are 17.0 points, 9.2 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game.
