Camp Mystic Carnage: First Photos Reveal Scene

Flooding Devastates Texas Christian Summer Camp, Resulting in Multiple Fatalities

A severe flash flood struck a well-known summer camp in Texas, resulting in the tragic loss of at least four young children. The intense storm surge caused walls to collapse, furniture to be tossed about, and widespread destruction throughout the camp grounds, leaving behind scenes of chaos and devastation.

Inside the camp, rescue teams found belongings scattered and stained with mud, including beds, backpacks, and clothing. The camp’s mess hall was completely destroyed, with debris and water damage evident inside. The floodwaters had risen so high that they had spilled over the doors, with muddy lines marking the water level inside the buildings.

Photos show a stuffed animal covered in dirt lying beside a torn shirt on the steps, illustrating the suddenness and ferocity of the flood. Outside, furniture, luggage, and miscellaneous items were piled up, evidence of the sudden rush of water that inundated the site.

Among the victims were children aged 7 to 9, including Renee Smajstrla, Sarah Marsh, Janie Hunt, and Lila Bonner. Overall, nine children have died in the region due to the storm. Rescuers report having saved over 850 people during search missions, with eight sustaining injuries.

The camp, which has operated for more than 70 years and accommodates over 750 girls, primarily between ages 7 and 17, is situated on the Guadalupe River in the suburbs of San Antonio. The river surged an extraordinary 26 feet in just 45 minutes—an event not seen in the area since 1987—following more than 45 minutes of heavy rainfall.

A flood warning was issued at 4 a.m., catching many campers and staff unprepared as the waters rapidly rose and overwhelmed the camp. Several images depict the muddy, damaged interiors of cabins and belongings, highlighting the severity of the disaster.
