Indiana Fever GM Opens Up on Parting Ways with DeWanna Bonner

Indiana Fever Parts Ways with DeWanna Bonner

The Indiana Fever made the surprising decision to waive veteran forward DeWanna Bonner on June 25, shortly after reports surfaced indicating she was seeking a departure from the team. Bonner, who had been sidelined since June 10, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged that the fit with the franchise was not ideal.

In her statement, Bonner said, “I want to sincerely thank the Indiana Fever for the opportunity to be part of the franchise. Although we shared goals and excitement for the season, I felt it wasn’t the right fit, and I appreciate the organization’s willingness to let me move on at this stage of my career.”

Team General Manager Amber Cox elaborated on the situation, explaining that Bonner had shared her feelings of disconnect with the team. Despite efforts to explore trades to accommodate her contract and preferences, no suitable options materialized. Cox emphasized that the franchise respects Bonner’s veteran status and decided that parting ways was the best choice for everyone.

“As we began the season, she expressed that it wasn’t a good fit for her. We discussed it extensively and explored trade possibilities, but due to the contract level, nothing was fitting,” Cox said. “We wish her nothing but the best moving forward. It’s unfortunate it didn’t work out, but we’re committed to moving on.”

Cox also highlighted the respectful approach taken by the team, noting there was no ill will toward Bonner despite the circumstances. The organization’s decision reflects a focus on maintaining professionalism and mutual respect amidst the transition.
