Zohran Mamdani Reports Just $2,000 in Bank in Latest Disclosure

NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Reports Minimal Assets Despite Privileged Background

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, reported having only $2,000 in assets on his recent state financial disclosures. Despite a privileged upbringing supported by family wealth and an annual legislative salary of $131,000, Mamdani listed the same modest assets over five years.

He owns no U.S. property or investments but disclosed a parcel of land in Uganda, acquired about ten years ago, valued between $150,000 and $250,000. Mamdani also lives in a rent-stabilized apartment with his family on Riverside Drive, a property that has been in his family for 25 years, while publicly complaining about rent hikes.

His disclosures reveal he worked briefly as a foreclosure prevention counselor for a housing justice organization in 2019 before his election in 2020. Critics argue that Mamdani’s claims of poverty are misleading, pointing to his affluent background and living conditions. Political strategist Hank Sheinkopf dismissed Mamdani’s poverty narrative, describing it as an attempt to appear relatable.

Family Wealth and Income

His mother, Mira Nair, is an acclaimed filmmaker with numerous awards and productions for Disney and Netflix. She sold a $1.45 million West Chelsea apartment in 2019, where Mamdani grew up. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a prominent professor at Columbia University, earning an estimated $308,000 annually, and the family resides in a lavish Upper Manhattan apartment valued by Zillow as a 3-bedroom corner unit.

Controversies and Extracurriculars

Mamdani has been criticized for a recent stunt involving eating with his hands, which some observers considered performative. Before politics, he performed as a rapper under stages such as “Mr. Cardamom” and “Young Cardamom,” earning royalties of up to $5,000 in 2024. He also contributed to a soundtrack for his mother’s Disney film and has faced skepticism about his claims of poverty versus his affluent background.

His office declined to comment.
