Everton Manager David Moyes Pays Tribute to Diogo Jota at Anfield
Everton’s manager, David Moyes, laid a bouquet of flowers at Anfield to honor the life of Diogo Jota following his untimely death. The 28-year-old Liverpool forward tragically died in a car accident in Spain, along with his brother Andre, 26.
Jota’s Lamborghini Huracan was involved in a fatal crash after a tyre blowout while he was overtaking another vehicle near Zamora, just ten miles from the Portuguese border. The car rolled over and caught fire, and emergency services were unable to save them. Jota was reportedly traveling with his brother, who played for Portuguese second division side Penafiel, on their way to catch a ferry to Britain following lung surgery advice.
The football community globally has expressed their condolences. Many Liverpool players and staff, including former teammate Virgil van Dijk and current players, attended Jota’s funeral in Gondomar, Portugal, paying their respects. Van Dijk and others carried floral tributes into the service. Liverpool manager Arne Slot and Portuguese internationals such as Bruno Fernandes and Joao Moutinho also attended, alongside hundreds of mourners lining the streets.
Jota, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool and helped win the Premier League last season, had recently married his partner Rute Cardoso, the mother of their three children. His death has cast a shadow of sorrow over football, with fans and players alike mourning the loss of a talented and beloved player.
