Ruben Neves Carries Diogo Jota’s Coffin After Late Night Return from Club World Cup

Tragedy Strikes as Footballer Diogo Jota and Brother Die in Car Crash

Portuguese international footballer Diogo Jota, along with his brother André, was tragically killed in a car accident in Spain during the early hours of Thursday morning. The brothers were driving east along a remote stretch of highway near Zamora when their vehicle lost control, rolled over, and caught fire, destroying the car and surrounding vegetation. Despite efforts by emergency services, both brothers could not be rescued at the scene.

The news of Jota’s death was confirmed as his Portugal teammates, including Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, flew to Portugal for his funeral in Gondomar. Neves, who also played with Jota at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Porto, made a late-night trip from the USA, where he participated in the Club World Cup, to attend the funeral and was one of the pallbearers.

Joao Cancelo, another Portugal international and former teammate, was also present. He was seen arriving at the funeral and appeared visibly emotional during the memorial service, including a poignant moment during a minute’s silence where he fought back tears. Neves, along with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Kalidou Koulibaly, offered support and showed their respect during this difficult time.

Jota, who made his senior debut for Portugal in 2019, earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals for his country. He was part of the squad that recently won the UEFA Nations League. Throughout his career, he played alongside Neves on 164 occasions and shared many moments at both club and international levels.

The accident occurred while Jota was en route to Santander to catch a ferry back to England for pre-season training, having been advised not to fly following lung surgery. The incident has sent shockwaves through the football community, with fellow players and fans mourning the loss of a talented and beloved athlete.
