Tributes at the Funeral of Diogo Jota and His Brother in Gondomar
Members of Liverpool Football Club paid their respects as they arrived to attend the funeral of Diogo Jota, carrying wreaths in honor of their late teammate and his brother, Andre Silva.
The Portugal international and Liverpool star tragically died in a car crash on Thursday, along with his 25-year-old brother. The accident occurred on the A-52 highway near Zamora, Spain, when their vehicle caught fire following what is believed to be a tyre blowout. They were on a trip to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK, following Jota’s medical advice not to fly due to recent lung surgery.
The funeral service started at 10 a.m., with club captain Virgil van Dijk seen holding a wreath shaped like a football shirt bearing Jota’s No.20. Teammate Andrew Robertson carried a wreath with the No.30, the number his brother wore at his club. Outside the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, crowds cheered as Liverpool players were introduced, showcasing the deep bond with the departed players.
Many family and friends, visibly emotional, arrived with their coffins into the church, including Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, who had married him just last month, and their three children. Jota’s parents and extended family were also present, mourning the loss of the talented winger and his brother.
Notable attendees included Portugal’s manager Roberto Martinez, Fernando Santos, and former club coaches Vasco Seabra and Nuno Espirito Santo. International colleagues Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo also traveled across the Atlantic to pay their respects, both visibly moved during the service in Orlando, Florida, prior to attending the funeral.
Jota’s passing has deeply affected the football community, with many expressing their sorrow and sympathy for the family during this heartbreaking time.
