Sharks Spotted Near Beachgoers in the Rockaways

Shark Sightings Close to the Shore at Rockaway Beach Prompt Safety Measures

Several sharks were observed swimming near the shoreline at Rockaway Beach during the Fourth of July celebrations, leading to the temporary closure of a section of the beach for safety reasons.

Videos circulating on social media showed one of the sharks approaching beachgoers in shallow waters, raising concerns among visitors and officials alike. Sightings were reported at multiple locations, including Beach 32nd Street around 11:30 a.m., Beach 144th Street, and Beach 30th Street.

The entrance at Beach 30th Street was closed for about an hour due to these sightings. Authorities emphasized that the sharks came very close to beach visitors.

Deputy Mayor Kaz Daughtry warned on social media that, thanks to drone technology and vigilant lifeguards, the situation is being closely monitored and managed to keep everyone safe during the holiday.

Despite the tense situation, some visitors found the shark sightings to be interesting rather than alarming. A local driver remarked that seeing sharks was a new experience for his children, calling it a “little excitement.” Conversely, others, like Nanette Conover, expressed strong caution, emphasizing the danger sharks pose, especially given previous incidents of injuries from bites.

As thousands flock to beaches across the state for the holiday, officials have increased shark surveillance efforts, deploying drones, helicopters, and additional patrols. Governor Kathy Hochul assured the public that all measures are in place to prevent attacks, highlighting the recent acquisition of advanced drone technology equipped with night vision and thermal imaging to enhance monitoring.

Different counties are adopting varied strategies, with Nassau increasing patrols and drone deployment, while Suffolk plans routine monitoring. Authorities reiterated the importance of following lifeguard instructions and staying alert to ensure a safe holiday season.
