Delta Wing Part Crashes onto NC Driveway Mid-Flight
Aircraft Part Falls onto Driveway in North Carolina
An unexpected incident occurred when a piece of a Delta Airlines aircraft detached during a flight and landed in a residential neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina. The fragment, believed to be part of the aircraft’s left wing, was found in a driveway just yards from a parked car.
The flight, a Boeing 737 traveling from Atlanta to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, was delayed overnight due to thunderstorms in Georgia. Despite losing the wing component, the crew successfully landed the plane around 1:15 a.m., with no injuries reported. The airline confirmed that the missing part, a segment of the wing’s trailing edge flap, did not compromise the safety of the landing.
Upon inspection after landing, crews noticed the flap was absent, prompting support for retrieval efforts and investigation cooperation. Trailing edge flaps are used during takeoff and landing to help manage aircraft speed and stability. Passengers seated near the wings would have had an up-close view of these flying surfaces.
A nearby scene captured police officers at the site where the large wing fragment landed just near a vehicle, emphasizing the close call. Despite the abrupt loss, the aircraft was able to touch down safely, thanks to the professionalism of the crew and safety measures in place.
This event is reminiscent of a previous incident involving a Delta plane that shed an emergency slide mid-flight, which later washed ashore at a beach house owned by a lawyer linked to a lawsuit against Boeing over safety issues. Additionally, in September, a small plane experienced a door falling off shortly after takeoff, though it landed safely without any injuries.
