Reece James Slams ‘Difficult’ Club World Cup Pitches in the US
Reece James Criticizes Poor Playing Conditions at the Club World Cup in the US
Reece James has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of the pitches used during the Club World Cup in the United States. The Chelsea defender emphasized that the challenging playing surfaces and weather conditions significantly impact the game, suggesting that FIFA should ensure the fields are better suited for football matches.
James’s remarks come ahead of next year’s World Cup in the US, highlighting issues such as unpredictable ball bounces and increased player fatigue. During a recent match against Benfica in Charlotte, which was interrupted for nearly five hours due to lightning, Chelsea faced one of their toughest pitches in the tournament. Now in Philadelphia to face Palmeiras, James explained, “The pitches are difficult, and the climate makes it even harder. The ball often goes high in the air and bounces unpredictably, which isn’t what we’re used to.”
He added, “Playing on substandard pitches makes players tire more quickly. This isn’t just about us; it affects everyone involved, including fans and viewers. Better quality pitches that are adapted to the climate would improve the overall competition.” James also pointed out that the high temperatures and travel demands in the US are unusual for European teams, affecting performance.
Despite these conditions, James remains optimistic about his form, stating, “I’m managing well and feeling good.” FIFA responded to concerns by affirming that the pitches meet international standards for playability and that they continue to monitor surface quality. The fields were relaid before the tournament to replace fake turf, and FIFA expects next summer’s World Cup to be on better-quality surfaces, as stadiums will be handed over earlier.
James reflected on the physically demanding matches, including a long, exhausting game against Benfica, which highlighted the tough conditions they are playing under. He expressed hope that recovery is progressing and that the team will be ready for their upcoming fixtures.
