Young Passenger Falls off Railing Into Porthole at Disney Cruise—Rescued by Father
Girl Overboard on Disney Cruise Rescued After Falling Through Porthole
A five-year-old girl who fell into the ocean from a Disney Cruise was not intentionally placed near the ship’s railing by her father, contrary to rumors. The child slipped through an open porthole and into the waters below while on the deck of the Disney Dream in international waters.
She was sitting on a railing on a less-crowded fourth-floor deck around 11:30 a.m. when she suddenly fell backwards through the opening and into the sea. Her parents were nearby playing shuffleboard. Her father, a 37-year-old man, only learned of the fall after the child’s mother alerted him.
Without hesitation, he jumped into the water, swiftly locating and grabbing her. The pair then held onto each other and treaded water for approximately 20 minutes before rescue crews arrived. The quick response and training of the ship’s crew were crucial in saving both of them. A crew member recounted seeing the father offloading the girl onto rescue personnel, and security footage confirmed the family’s account of the incident.
The ship’s safety barriers are designed to prevent such accidents, though a passenger indicated there are small gaps that could potentially allow a child to climb through. It remains unclear why the porthole was open at the time or how the girl managed to slip inside.
Relieved family members received medical attention onboard before both were taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. The father was hospitalized, though details about his injuries were not disclosed.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office praised the crew’s swift and effective response, emphasizing that their training helped avert what could have been a tragedy. The incident underscores the importance of safety protocols and quick rescue operations at sea.
