American Airlines Flight Turns Back Over Suspicious Text Message Alarm

Passenger’s Misinterpreted Message Causes Flight Diversion

A passenger aboard an American Airlines flight prompted a midair emergency after believing a text message was a bomb threat. The flight, traveling from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Dallas, was diverted to Isla Verde shortly after takeoff when the unidentified passenger reported a suspicious message to the crew.

The message in question simply contained the acronym “RIP,” which is commonly understood as “Rest in Peace.” The passenger interpreted it as a warning of danger, leading to the alert. The crew was informed and emergency protocols were initiated, prompting the plane to divert to Puerto Rico for safety reasons.

Authorities later spoke with the passenger who received the text, revealing that their relative had passed away the previous day — the reason for their own trip to Dallas. The incident was declared a false alarm after authorities confirmed there was no real threat.

After authorities cleared the situation, the flight was able to resume its journey and land safely in Dallas the following day. The airline did not comment on the incident.
