Bill Ackman Asks Cuomo to Exit NYC Race, Endorses Eric Adams
Bill Ackman Endorses Mayor Eric Adams for Re-election, Urges Cuomo to Withdraw
Billionaire investor Bill Ackman has publicly endorsed the incumbent mayor, Eric Adams, for a second term, while recommending that former Governor Andrew Cuomo exit the race for New York City’s mayoralty. Ackman, who contributed $500,000 to Cuomo’s unsuccessful Democratic primary campaign, expressed in a recent statement that Adams is the only candidate capable of defeating left-leaning nominee Zohran Mamdani.
“Adams can win this election, and Cuomo should step aside to improve Adams’ chances,” Ackman tweeted. He acknowledged Cuomo appeared subdued, with body language and energy levels suggesting he is not prepared for the campaign fight. Ackman made his decision after meeting with both leaders earlier this week and concluded that the low likelihood of a successful write-in campaign justified Cuomo’s withdrawal.
Ackman praised Adams, describing him as a “great campaigner” who can mobilize grassroots support to defeat Mamdani in November. Despite some criticisms, Ackman highlighted Mayor Adams’ achievements, particularly in addressing public safety, affordability, quality of life, and economic growth, saying the mayor’s authentic approach is an asset.
Ackman also pointed out some flaws during Adams’ first term, such as staffing choices, but emphasized the mayor’s overall accomplishments and his commitment to hiring talented New Yorkers. “Many experienced citizens are eager to join Eric’s team,” he added.
In contrast, Ackman criticized Mamdani’s socialist and anti-NYPD policies, stating they would be detrimental to New York City. He emphasized Adams’ energy and authenticity, believing these traits will lead to victory. Ackman’s support reflects a broader coalition of New Yorkers who believe Adams is effective in improving safety and confidence in the city.
Meanwhile, civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton recently called on Cuomo to withdraw, advocating for a clear one-on-one race between Adams and Mamdani. Cuomo has said he will make his decision in the coming days after reviewing new polling data.
