Bryan Kohberger Pleads Guilty to Idaho Student Killings
Suspect Pleads Guilty in Idaho Student Murders
Bryan Kohberger has confessed to the murders of four University of Idaho students, accepting a plea deal that avoids the death penalty. He pleaded guilty to four counts of murder in a court in Boise, Idaho, signaling an end to a lengthy and perplexing investigation.
Wearing a short tie and plain attire, Kohberger appeared emotionless and responded minimally during the court proceedings. In a chilling confirmation, he admitted to killing Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, who were attacked at their off-campus residence in November 2022 with a large knife.
The plea was accepted after prosecutors detailed how Kohberger had stalked the victims’ home prior to the attack. Evidence showed he entered through a sliding door, killed two students in their beds, and then encountered two others on the stairs, leading to their deaths as well. A witness saw a masked man with “bushy eyebrows”—a description matching Kohberger.
Investigators found Kohberger’s DNA near one victim, and evidence indicated he purchased a matching knife beforehand and attempted to erase evidence afterward, including cleaning his car. Surveillance footage linked a white Hyundai—matching Kohberger’s car—to the scene on the night of the murders. A surviving housemate also described seeing a man with “bushy eyebrows” lurking inside.
Though Kohberger maintained innocence for months and even suggested alternative suspects, most evidence pointed to his guilt. He was arrested shortly after the murders and found with a gun, knife, mask, and a hidden ID related to the crime.
His sentencing is scheduled for July 23, where families will deliver statements. The plea concludes a case that captivated the nation but leaves many questions about the motive and the killer’s reasons unanswered.
