GOP Probes Hochul for Using Medicaid Funds to Cover Budget Gap

House Republicans Investigate Alleged Medicaid Funding Withholding by Governor Hochul

Members of the House GOP are examining claims that New York Governor Kathy Hochul is withholding Medicaid funds, including from hospitals serving vulnerable populations, to cover a budget shortfall. A letter from GOP representatives demands that Hochul surrender records related to the alleged misuse of federal taxpayer dollars, asserting that such actions have increased property taxes and reduced local services.

These funding issues are particularly impacting smaller counties like Broome and Erie, which lack substantial tax bases to offset the cuts. In Nassau County, hospitals have faced severe challenges; one hospital even experienced a “hostile takeover” of its board by the governor, leading to resignations from executives protesting the move.

Last year, Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) sued the state, claiming it was denied over a billion dollars in federal Medicaid funding mandated by law, forcing it to cover costs typically covered by federal aid for more than two decades.

Under the recent budget agreement, a state-controlled board was appointed at NUMC, replacing local officials. Critics say this move limits local control and exacerbates funding pressures for the hospital, which primarily serves uninsured residents.

House lawmakers have accused Hochul of misuse, emphasizing that federal funds intended for healthcare purposes are being diverted to mask the state’s budget issues. They have set a deadline for July 16 for Hochul’s office to provide records about NUMC and Medicaid funding policies.

Assemblyman Ed Ra expressed support for the investigation, stating, “Proper oversight is essential to protect both taxpayers and residents relying on our safety-net hospitals.”
